[...] Pertussis Outbreak and Some Facts One of the most popular talks I give is on the subject of vaccination. With so many scare tactics, misconstrued facts and anecdotal stories whirling around, finding accurate information about the risks and benefits of vaccination proves to be difficult at best. Now parents have an additional concern – there is a pertussis (whopping cough) “epidemic” in California, and if it continues, experts say it could be the worst in over 50 years. (The first vaccine was introduced in the 1930s and the vaccine was widely used by the 1940s, so this does not take us back to the pre-vaccine era, but does come close.) As of June 15, 910 cases have been confirmed and another 600 have been suspected – though as you will see, this could be a dramatic underestimation. [...]

I'm wondering if immunity is passed via breastmilk and whether the vaccine is a live vaccine? Could a mother unwilling to risk exposing a newborn to the vaccine risks, get the vaccine herself and increase the chance for immunity while breastfeeding?

Jessie,
Thanks so much for this update. So helpful, especially since I live in California and am concerned about my 7 month old. Would love any thoughts you have about flying with him in the fall. How risky would it be to fly and what immune boosters would you recommend if we decide to fly?

This post is an example of why I appreciate VR. Reading this was very helpful in understanding what Whooping Cough is and what to consider in regard to it. I think that too often it is easy to feel pressure to "just vaccinate" or to "never vaccinate." It is most important to be informed. VR helps to inform and educate. Being informed helps parents to make the best decisions for their families and to not just buy into the "do something" mentality. Thank you!
